For the 18th time now, PicoQuant invited top researchers working in the field of Single Molecule Spectroscopy to the annual International Workshop on "Single Molecule Spectroscopy and Ultrasensitive Analysis in the Life Sciences" held in Berlin, September 5-7, 2012.

This year's workshop was again a great event with 106 participating researchers who enjoyed 37 talks and 41 posters. In his concluding remarks, Edward Lemke (EMBL Heidelberg, Germany) pointed out that many presentations dealt with real biological problems instead of standard samples that demonstrate the capabilities of the technique itself. Nonetheless, new applications and new methods still emerge, especially pushed by using combinations of different techniques.

Student award

Student Award Winner of the 18th Single Molecule WorkshopPicoQuant especially wants to encourage young scientists. As the quality of the students talks proved again to be excellent, it was impossible to nominate only one, but three winners. The prize was increased to 900 Euro and split between Sigrid Milles (EMBL Heidelberg, Germany) who gave a talk on "Nup153 in nuclear transport - plasticity of a highly flexible nucleoporin", Stefan Geissbühler (EPFL Lausanne, Switzerland) who spoke about "Balanced Super-resolution Optical Fluctuation Imaging" and Bengt Wunderlich (University of Zürich, Switzerland) who presented his work on "Microfluidic Mixing and Sorting for Single Molecule Detection".

The workshop on "Single Molecule Spectroscopy and Ultra Sensitive Analysis in the Life Sciences" is an annual event since 1995. To get an impression of our Single Molecule Workshops have a look at the video below.
