17th International Workshop on “Single Molecule Spectroscopy and Ultra Sensitive Analysis in the Life Sciences”

The seventeenth International Workshop on “Single Molecule Spectroscopy and Ultrasensitive Analysis in the Life Sciences” brought together international top researchers in the field of ultrasensitive optical detection and single molecule spectroscopy and microscopy.
More than 115 participants enjoyed 44 highly up-to-date talks, including 6 invited lectures given by renowned scientists. During the poster session with more than 42 scientific posters, participants discussed latest results. Informal gatherings during the reception and a dinner lead to fruitful discussions about new ideas, projects and new networks. In his concluding remarks, Xiaoliang Sunney Xie pointed out that there are still new innovations coming out, that the techniques are evolving, that the scientific opportunities are huge and that the tools are becoming common practice.

PicoQuant especially wants to encourage young scientists. As in the previous years a special prize of 750 Euro for the “Best Student Talk” was awarded by PicoQuant GmbH. Again this year it proved extremely difficult for the jury to nominate the winner, since there were so many good contributions. In the end the price was split between Kerstin Weiss (University of Göttingen) who gave a talk on “Quantifying the Diffusion of Membrane Proteins and Peptides in Lipid Bilayers” and Justin Pinkney (University of Oxford) for his presentation on “Single-molecule fluorescence studies of site-specific DNA recombination”.
