What Our Employees Say
Fábio Barachati
After completing my PhD in Engineering Physics, I joined PicoQuant for an internship, at the end of which I was offered a permanent position in the Systems Development Group. During my studies, I remember looking at PicoQuant’s website and wishing I could measure my samples on one of their systems. Now, five years later, I am helping to develop the next generation of single-photon microscopes, which will hopefully continue to inspire PhD students and scientists alike for years to come.
Since the beginning, my work at PicoQuant has been a lot of fun, with no shortage of challenging problems to keep the team busy. Working with my colleagues has been the best part of my job, as I get to collaborate with and learn from a highly talented and diverse group of people—from engineers and scientists to programmers, designers, and even sales and marketing specialists. We all work together to bring the best products to market, and it is great to see how PicoQuant’s magic happens behind the scenes.

Mario Gerecke
Coming from a PhD in femtosecond time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy at Humboldt University of Berlin, my path to PicoQuant in 2017 felt very natural. At first, I was hesitant to take on a sales position as a recent graduate, but within the first week I realized that there are few jobs in industry that are so close to science—I love that. Our customers include renowned researchers and even Nobel laureates. Receiving their feedback that our products enable their latest projects and ideas is really something special for me.
In 2021, after my parental leave, I was promoted to team leader in our department, allowing me to combine career growth with valuable family time. Although PicoQuant is no longer a start-up, everyone still has the opportunity to influence important decisions, and employees are encouraged to contribute in their own way. At the same time, values such as team spirit, fairness, and especially family are highly valued at PicoQuant, and I appreciate that these values are actively embraced by the management as well.

Corinna Nock
I started as a working student in laser production at PicoQuant in 2012. Initially, it was intended as a part-time job to finance my studies and gain first experience in industry. However, even at that time, it was clear to me that the diverse range of opportunities available here for scientists specializing in photonics and life sciences would provide an ideal starting point for my career after completing my physics degree. I was also fascinated by the enthusiasm for technical innovation that continues to drive PicoQuant forward today.
10 years later, I have been given the opportunity to take on the role of Head of Laser Development, allowing me to help shape this drive for innovation even more directly and to implement it together with a dedicated team of developers. As a department manager, it is important to me to create an environment in which everyone can realize their potential, where an open culture of dialogue exists, and where strong team spirit and mutual support form the foundation of our daily work.

Stefanie Kuhlich
Steffi has been part of the PicoQuant team for over ten years and is our expert for everything to do with finance and accounting. She makes sure that everything is in order when it comes to figures, invoices, and payments. We asked her a few questions about her day-to-day work, special moments, and the values she experiences every day at PicoQuant.
What does a typical working day in your role look like?
There are rarely typical working days, as there are actually different tasks waiting for me every day. I’m usually in contact with my colleagues and our tax office to ensure that all invoices and payments are correct at the end of the day.
What has been your personal highlight with us so far?
Personally, I remember some great Christmas and summer parties over the past few years. However, one special highlight was definitely the celebration of PicoQuant’s 25th anniversary, as well as the 25th workshop, where I had the opportunity to attend the evening event at the “Stadion An der Alten Försterei.”
Which of the company’s values do you experience in your day-to-day work?
I found a very pleasant working atmosphere right from the start – personal and private matters are also recognized and respected here.
What are the personal benefits of working with us for you?
I can be sure that difficult situations can be addressed and that I will always find a sympathetic ear in personal matters.

Mehrdad Akhavan
What’s it like to work at PicoQuant? We asked Mehrdad! He has been part of our team since 2022 and brings his passion for hardware design, PCB development and embedded systems to exciting projects. Originally from Iran, he studied in Germany – today he helps us develop pioneering technologies. In this interview, he talks about his day-to-day work, his experiences in the team and special projects.
How did you experience your arrival in Germany? Is there anything that you particularly remember from this time – be it a challenge, a nice encounter or a special moment?
Of course it was a change – a new language, a new system and a completely new culture, everything was strange at first. I first had to complete a six-month language course at the University of Stuttgart, which later helped me enormously in my day-to-day work. It was the key to many forms of communication – especially to be able to express myself confidently in the team and actively participate in technical discussions.
What does a typical working day in your role look like?
Varied is probably the best word to describe my working day! It usually starts with a good cup of coffee and planning the tasks ahead. Then it’s off to design development, where I’m in close contact with my team – teamwork is very important to us! If there’s any time left over, I use it to research exciting topics or to further hone my skills. However, my main focus is on development, testing, validation and – this is my personal ambition – solving tricky technical challenges. No two days are the same, and that’s what makes it so exciting!
What strengths do you bring to your team?
My expertise in hardware design, PCB development and embedded systems is definitely a big plus point that I bring to the team. In short: I’m the one who puts out (technical) fires – structured, precise and solution-oriented. But that’s only half the battle! Another of my strengths is to pass on these solutions efficiently and clearly to other departments, such as Mechanics or Product Management. Because only with structured problem-solving, precise work and smooth communication can we develop high-quality and reliable products as a team. And that’s what makes us successful in the end!
Why did you decide to join our company back then?
The innovative work at a leading company in the industry like PicoQuant convinced me right from the start. I found the combination of high-tech and science and the collaboration on projects particularly exciting. And of course, you can’t forget Berlin! A city full of culture and international contacts – that was a decisive factor for me.
Is there a particular project or experience that you particularly remember?
Definitely! The development of the Luminosa was one of the most formative experiences in my career. I was responsible for the electronic modules – from PCB development to optimization. The goal? To reduce production costs and simplify assembly. The close collaboration with the production, construction, and system design teams was particularly exciting. Together, we developed solutions that not only significantly improved system performance, but also efficiency. Projects like this show how great teamwork really can be!
