Summary
PicoQuant's International Workshop on “Single Molecule Spectroscopy and Super-resolution Microscopy in the Life Sciences”, held from September 14-16, 2016, brought together researchers form various scientific fields such as Physics, Biology, and Chemistry. This three day conference allowed attending scientists to report on and share their latest discoveries in ultrasensitive optical detection, both going down to the single molecule level as well as beyond the diffraction limit.
Over 30 presentations reporting latest developments in these fields were held by students and renowned scientists alike. The talks were attended to and enjoyed by about 80 scientists from all over the world. The workshop program was rounded out by a poster session with about 30 contributions, leading to fruitful exchange between the participants. Trending subjects this year covered themes such as the parallelization of single molecule detection, ways to combine various detection and imaging techniques in a single experiment, how to count molecules, and how to transfer single molecule experiments to live cell observation.
Opportunities for networking and fruitful idea exchanges were provided at informal gatherings during breaks as well as at the welcoming reception and conference dinner. Over the course of the workshop, PicoQuant demonstrated its novel fast imaging technique rapidFLIM. This method redefines the standards for recording dynamic fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM), allowing acquiring FLIM images with more than 10 full frames per second, depending on sample brightness and image size.

Student award
The student contributions from this year were all of excellent quality, making the jury's job to select a winner a very difficult yet enjoyable task. The student award of 750 Euro went this year to Falk Scheider (University of Oxford, United Kingdom) who presented his research on “lipid and protein diffusion in actin-free plasma membrane vesicles”.
