Science in your labs - Vienna 2013
PicoQuant: Science in your labs
“2nd FLIM and FCS Workshop”
November 12 - 13, 2013 in Vienna, Austria
Joint workshop of Max F. Perutz Laboratories and PicoQuant GmbH

Summary
Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Microscopy (FLIM) and Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy (FCS) are particularly well suited to monitor interactions between molecules both in cells and in vitro. Yet, the 'activation energy' to apply these methods in life science research is relatively high. That is why one of the leading manufacturers of advanced imaging instruments, PicoQuant, Vienna BioCenter Campus Scientific Facility (CSF) and Max F. Perutz Laboratories (MFPL), which is a joint venture of the University of Vienna and Medical University of Vienna, had joined efforts to organize the 2nd MFPL FLIM and FCS Workshop. It was held on November 12-13, 2013 in Vienna, Austria.
The workshop showcased the utility of the advanced imaging techniques in biological research and provided hands-on practicals using real samples in order to lower the 'activation barrier' for the potential users. Outstanding scientists, including Gottfried Köhler (MFPL, Austria), Katrin Heinze (University of Würzburg, Germany), Gerhard Schütz (Technical University of Vienna, Austria) and Sofia Johansson (Karolinska Institutet, Sweden) introduced the concepts of time-resolved fluorescence microscopy, fluorescence auto- and cross-correlation and anisotropy measurements, superresolution imaging, development and use of fluorescent reporters, and the examples of their use in biological research.
In the afternoon, scientists from the MFPL, CSF, and PicoQuant demonstrated FLIM, FCS, and structural illumination using real biological samples. These hands-on sessions covered various practical aspects of sample preparation, data acquisition and analysis using PicoQuant's MicroTime 200 and Applied Precision's DeltaVision OMX systems available via CSF Advanced Microscopy group.
