Once more in a very successful series of events we invited all researchers working in the field of Single Molecule Spectroscopy with Laser Induced Fluorescence to the 6th International Workshop on "Single Molecule Detection and Ultrasensitive Analysis in the Life Sciences" 27 September - 29 September 2000 at PicoQuant in the science and technology park Berlin Adlershof.
Summary
The recent years have seen an ever increasing interest in the detection and spectroscopy of single molecules. Especially in genetic and biochemical screening and assaying, single molecule detection (SMD) under biologically native conditions are attracting more and more researchers. The experimental method of choice is laser induced fluorescence detection either on surfaces or SMD of freely moving molecules in liquids. While the over the last years basics and methods were dominating, we are now beginning to see first real life-sciences applications both in research and industry. In the last couple of years, the annual Workshop on SMD, organized by PicoQuant in Berlin, has proven to be an excellent forum for the discussion of the above mentioned topics. The numbers of participants have been steadily growing and we look forward to organize the 7th workshop 26-28.September 2001.
Student Award 2000
PicoQuant GmbH wants to encourage especially young scientists in the field. Therefore a special prize of 1500 DM for the "Best Student Paper" was awarded by PicoQuant GmbH for the second time. Undergraduate and PhD students were invited to participate in this contest. The winner was Jonas Korlach (left in picture) with the talk "A NEW STRATEGY FOR SEQUENCING INDIVIDUAL MOLECULES OF DNA" (Jonas Korlach, Michael Levene, Stephen W. Turner, Dan Larson, Mathieu Foquet, Harold G. Craighead & Watt W. Webb, Applied & Engineering Physics, Clark Hall, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, 14853, U.S.A.).
For the best poster a book price was awarded to Fabian Köhn (centre in picture) for his poster "INFLUENCE OF THE LOCAL ENVIRONMENT ON THE PHOTOPHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF SINGLE XANTHEN-DYE STUDIED BY CONFOCAL FLUORESCENCE MICROSCOPY" (Fabian Köhn, J. Hofkens, Molecular Dynamics and Spectroscopy, University Leuven, Belgium, M.W.P.L. Baars, E.W. Meijer, F.C. De Schryver, Laboratory of Macromolecular and Organic Chemistry, TU Eindhoven, The Netherlands).
