Once more in a successful series of events we invited all researchers and manufacturers working in the field of Single Molecule Detection with Laser Induced Fluorescence to the 5th International Workshop on "Single Molecule Detection and Ultrasensitive Analysis in the Life Sciences" 29 September - 1 October 1999 at PicoQuant in the science and technology park Berlin Adlershof.
Aims and Purpose
The recent years have seen an ever increasing interest in the detection and spectroscopy of single molecules. Especially in genetic and biochemical screening and assaying, single molecule detection (SMD) under biologically native conditions became an important issue. The experimental method of choice in SMD is laserinduced fluorescence detection either on surfaces or SMD of freely moving molecules in liquids. Recently first applications have been reported from industry research groups concerning the use of SMD with picosecond diode laser systems. In the same context, two photon SMD has been reported using blue and green absorbing dyes as marker molecules. Similar techniques may prove very useful when incorporated into miniaturized systems for capillary electrophoresis, high density micro plate screening etc. In the last couple of years, the annual Workshop on SMD, organized by PicoQuant in Berlin, has proven to be an excellent forum for the discussion of the above mentioned topics. The main goal of the Workshops is to give an overview of the latest research in the field and to stimulate new ideas.
Student Award 1999
For the first time this year a special prize of 1500 DM for the "Best Student Paper" was awarded by PicoQuant GmbH. Undergraduate and PhD students were invited to participate in this contest. The winner was Cedric Begon from the Laboratoire d'Optique des Surfaces et des Couches Minces (LOSCM), Marseille, together with his coworker H. Rigneault, who presented an excellent talk on Spontaneous Emission Control and Detection of Biological Markers. A book price for the best poster was awarded to Juhani T. Soini from Finland. The picture shows Rainer Erdmann, main workshop organizer and president of PicoQuant, congratulating the winners.
