14th International Workshop on Single Molecule Detection

Summary

For the 14th time now, PicoQuant invited the top researchers working in the field of Single Molecule Spectroscopy to the annual International Workshop on "Single Molecule Spectroscopy and Ultrasensitive Analysis in the Life Sciences" held in Berlin, September 17-19, 2008.

This year's workshop was again a great event with 101 researchers participating and enjoying 37 talks and 32 posters. In his concluding remarks, David J. Nesbitt (University of Colorado, USA) pointed out that this workshop has met and exceeded his expectations. He especially mentioned the that he was "blown away" by the new and powerful FCS methods like FLCS or the possibility of doing correlation analysis from nanoseconds over minutes to hours. Also the new multi-color parameter methods like ALEX and PIE as well as the talks dealing with the deeper understading of the nature of fluorophores were pointed out by him. The most notable remark, was, however, the "prophecy" that in 5 or latest 10 years time, there will be a Noble Price for work in the field of single molecule spectroscopy.

Student Award

PicoQuant especially wants to encourage young scientists. As in the previous years a special prize of 750 Euro for the "Best Student Talk" was awarded by PicoQuant GmbH. As expected from the previous years it proved extremely difficult for the jury to nominate the winner, since there were so many good contributions. In the end the price was awarded to Jan Vogelsang (LMU München) who gave a talk on "Control of Fluorescence Characteristics by Photoinduced Redox Reactions".
